Adler’s Winner Sends Denver to Unbeaten in 4
DENVER – Junior Hannah Adler (Oak Park, Calif.) netted her third goal of the season in the 107th minute off a free kick from freshman Natalie Beckman (Denver, Colo.) to lift the University of Denver women’s soccer team over Eastern Washington 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
“There was a lot of frustration in the opening 10-15 minutes,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “We looked like the team with heavy legs. It wasn’t our best first 45 minutes in either effort or performance, but we still had a shutout. We tested the team and made a few adjustments. Eastern Washington has some good weapons, they are strong in the back and are difficult to break down. We were missing the final pass. When you play probably seven different players in the back and keep a shutout, it’s a tribute to how we defended.”
Junior captain Brittany Wilson (Littleton, Colo.) made a crucial double save in the first period of extra time, one of seven she had on the day to keep her third cleansheet in the last four matches.
“Brittany came up with some big saves to keep us in the game,” Hooker said. “At halftime she had the same message as the coaches before we really got in there. She was looking forward to the next 45 minutes. She did a great job of calming the players down, keeping focus and putting a positive spin on it.”
Adler’s goal came from a set-piece down the left flank from Beckman. The Denver junior headed the initial Beckman cross off the bar, but headed home the rebound from inside the six-yard box to send the Pioneers to consecutive wins. Sunday afternoon’s goal is the 16th of Adler’s career and her sixth game-winning strike.
Denver outshot Eastern Washington 17-11 and took five of the match’s eight corner kicks.
