Albeno sets Lamar all-time scoring mark

September 16, 2013

TOMBALL, Texas – Kimmy Albeno became the all-time leading scorer in Lamar history Sunday, but her efforts weren’t enough as the Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision in double overtime to Massachusetts in a non-conference women’s soccer game at Tomball High School.

Albeno scored 7:39 into the first half to give Lamar a 1-0 lead and move her past Lisa Hance on Lamar’s all-time chart with 51 points. Albeno added to the school record she already holds with her 22nd career goal.

Lamar (3-4) seemed poised to take the lead into halftime, but UMass tied the game at 1 with just eight seconds remaining in the first half when Daniela Alvarez beat LU goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot on a set play after Lamar was whistled for a questionable foul.

Fontenot had a strong game for Lamar, finishing with 10 saves as UMass (2-4-1) outshot the Cardinals 31-6 for the game.

The Minutewomen got the winner with 5:31 remaining in the second overtime when Sara Pandolfi chipped one over Fontenot’s head. Fontenot collided with Pandolfi as she came out to get the ball.

Danielle Kriscenski made four saves for UMass.

Lamar returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it opens Southland Conference play at Northwestern State before hosting Oral Roberts in a conference game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

“We have to bounce back,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We have to be ready for conference play.”
