Albeno sets Lamar record in loss
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Kimmy Albeno set a Lamar career record with her 19th goal, but the Cardinals saw a late rally fall short in a 3-2 loss at Northern Arizona in a non-conference women’s soccer game Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, Lamar (1-1-0) found itself down 3-0 in the second half before scoring two goals within a span of 1:55 in the final four minutes of the game.
“I liked the way we came back,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “It was a great effort. Unfortunately, we made some mistakes and they capitalized. We have to minimize our mistakes.”
Northern Arizona (2-0-0) opened the scoring 22:51 into the second half when Jordan Stenger’s blast beat Bailey Fontenot just inside the crossbar.
Lindsay Doyle and Haley Wingender scored to give the Lumberjacks a 3-0 lead with 14:29 remaining before the Cardinals mounted their comeback. Albeno got Lamar on the board with 3:11 remaining converting a cross from Jennifer Yacuta. Albeno’s goal moved her atop the Lamar all-time list, eclipsing the record of 18 set by Lisa Hance.
Yacuta scored with 1:16 remaining, scoring on a pass from Albeno to make it 3-2. Lamar had a couple of looks at tying the game, but couldn’t get the equalizer past Lauren Weaver, who finished with two saves. Fontenot made six saves for Lamar.
The Cardinals return to action with two games at the UTSA Tournament next weekend. Lamar faces South Dakota State at 4 p.m. Friday and the host Roadrunners at 1 p.m. Sunday.
