Albeno sets school record in Lamar victory
Oct. 12, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – Kimmy Albeno’s school-record ninth goal of the season lifted Lamar University to a 2-1 victory over visiting Central Arkansas in a Southland Conference women’s soccer game Friday evening.
Albeno’s goal, which eclipsed Lisa Hance’s previous record of eight, came a little more than seven minutes after Central Arkansas had tied the game just 2:53 into the second half. Albeno now has 21 points, tying Hance’s mark set last season.
“That shows how we are maturing as a team,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “They scored and we came right back and answered.”
Lamar (7-7-1 overall, 3-1-0 conference) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half of Jannet Hernandez’s third goal of the season just 6:48 before intermission.
Alexandra Wurst scored on a penalty kick for Central Arkansas (9-5-1, 1-3-1) to tie the game. That set the stage for Albeno’s heroics.
“Kimmy was a little nervous early because her parents were here,” Cervantes said. “But she settled down, gained some confidence and had a great game.”
Bailey Fontenot made seven saves to pick up the win in goal. Fontenot managed to get a piece of Wurst’s penalty kick goal, but not enough, as the tally ended her shutout streak at 273:39.
“Bailey had a strong game,” Cervantes said. “She made some big saves, and you certainly can’t fault her on the PK.”
The Lady Cardinals return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when they host Northwestern State in a Southland Conference game.
“It’s the old cliché, just take it one game at a time,” Cervantes said. “If we take care of our job, we’ll be in good shape for the conference tournament.”
