Albeno ties school record in Lamar win
Sept. 30, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – Kimmy Albeno tied a Lamar record with her eighth goal of the season to lead the Lady Cardinals to a 1-0 win over Nicholls in a Southland Conference women’s soccer game Sunday.
Albeno, who tied the mark set by Lisa Hance last season, scored 21:27 into the game. Albeno rifled a shot that was blocked by a Nicholls defender before slamming the carom past Nicholls goalkeeper Amanda Boylson.
That was all the Lady Cardinals (5-7-1 overall, 1-1 conference) needed. Bailey Fontenot made six saves to register her third shutout of the season for Lamar.
“I was very happy with the way we played,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We had to go against a strong wind in the second half, but we played a controlled game and did what we needed to for the win.”
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Lady Cardinals, who improved to 4-0-1 at home this season.
“This was a good bounce back for us, especially after a tough (1-0) loss at McNeese State on Friday,” Cervantes said. “We were focused for all 90 minutes.”
Boylson made 11 saves for Nicholls (5-7, 0-2).
Lamar is at Southeastern Louisiana for a Southland Conference game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
