Another Match, Another Shutout For Creighton Men's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. - The fifth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team logged its fourth consecutive shutout victory to start the season as the Bluejays dealt visiting Fordham a 1-0 loss in front of 4,242 fans at Morrison Stadium Friday night. Senior goalkeeper Brian Holt made six saves in goal and a first-half goal by junior Jose Gomez was all the offense Creighton needed in improving to 4-0-0 on the year.
The nationally-ranked Bluejays have now started each of the last two seasons with four straight shutouts and have now outscored their opponents 10-0 on the season. The goal allowed by Fordham was the first it has surrendered this season, as the Rams dropped to 2-1-0 on the young season.
Gomez scored what proved to be the only goal of the night in the 18th minute when he took a feed from Liam Kelly and placed his left-footed shot in the only place two-time All Mid-Atlantic Region goalkeeper Ryan Meara could not stop it. Gomez sent his shot across the goal mouth and into the upper right 90 for a beautiful score, his second of the season.
All four of Fordham's shot in the first half found their way on goal. Holt, Creighton's record-setting senior keeper turned away all of the chances, which also included some loose balls cleared from the box. The senior logged six saves in his third solo shutout of the season, picking up his 40th career win and 30th career shutout to add to his school and MVC record number of clean sheets. He is just the fourth player in school history to post 40 wins in goal, joining Jay Fitzgerald (53), Matt Allen (43) and Mike Gabb (41).
"Fordham is a very strong opponent and they made it very tough for us tonight," said head coach Elmar Bolowich after the win. "In the first half there were a lot of scrambles in front of the goal and Holt came off of his line to knock them away, which is one of his strengths, and he really took control out there."
Fordham had what looked to be its best scoring chance in the 56th minute when a crossing pass found its way just in front of Holt at the top of the six-yard box, but even with his own defenders and Ram attackers in his way, he was able to dive forward and negate the opportunity with a clearing punch.
Creighton outshot the Rams 18-7 in the match, including 11-3 in a dominating second half. Near misses from Eric Miller in the 70th minute and header by Greg Jordan in the 86th minute, were in addition to the four shots on goal Meara turned away after halftime.
The Bluejays, who have averaged 4,834 fans for their first two home matches, will return to the road for a Sunday afternoon match at DePaul (1-2-0). The Bluejays and Blue Demons will kick off at 3 pm in Chicago.
