Apaches 46 game Unbeaten Streak is over.
DALLAS -- The 46-game unbeaten streak is over.
The Tyler Junior College men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Mt. San Antonio College on Sunday at Richland College. It was the Apaches’ first loss since Nov. 1, 2008.
“It was a fun ride. All those things come to an end some time,” TJC coach Steve Clements said. “You hate to see it end. Now we’ve got to clean up a one-game losing streak. I’m proud of our teams that put that streak together.”
Mt. San Antonio is located in Walnut, Calif., and California two-year colleges are not members of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
The Apaches (3-1-1), ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA, allowed an own goal early in the second half.
“They took a shot. It went off our guy’s leg and angled into our goal,” Clements said.
Clements called it a sloppy game with neither team owning any sustained possession. Clements said he was surprised by the one-sided statistics -- 10 shots on goal and 11 corner kicks for Mt. SAC while TJC had three and one, respectively.
“At some level our own lack of work rate and lack of defending had a lot to do with it,” Clements said. “It was two evenly matched teams.
“The thing to me that is glaring is that we’re not taking shots. We have got to pull the trigger. It’s not a lack of number of times we went down (on their end), although the stats look that way. In the last 15 minutes we were pressuring them hard.”
Mt. SAC, the two-time defending California state champion, defeated Richland 1-0 on Friday.
“Most California teams don’t want to come and play us and Richland in the same weekend,” Clements said. “It’s kind of fun to play somebody different.”
TJC plays a conference match Tuesday at Lon Morris. The women play first at 3 p.m., followed by the men at 5 p.m.
