APSU Escapes with 1-0 Soccer Win Over MSU
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State soccer team posted a 15-5 advantage in shots, but a goal by senior Emily Perkins in the 20th minute was all Austin Peay needed in a 1-0 Ohio Valley Conference victory on Friday night at Jayne Stadium.
The Lady Govs, who entered the weekend second in the OVC standings, improve to 10-7-1 overall and 6-2-1 in league play. The Eagles, who have been eliminated from the OVC Tournament, slip to 1-12-4 on the campaign and 1-5-3 in conference action.
“Tonight was another hard-fought match where we came up just a little short,” Head Coach Warren Lipka said. “I was pleased with our effort, work rate and attitude to attack.”
Perkins netted her sixth goal of the year, from approximately 18 yards out, off an assist from junior Andy Quiceno, who provided the through ball. Perkins now has a team-best 31 points on the season, while Quiceno notched her third assist and 15th point.
In addition to being +10 in shots, the Eagles registered a 6-1 upper hand in corner kicks. The Lady Govs recorded a 3-2 edge in shots on goal, and both goalkeepers were credited with two saves.
Junior Tatiana Ariza tallied a match-high three shots for APSU. Nine different MSU players attempted a shot, with six individuals collecting two each.
The defeat was Morehead State’s seventh this season by just one goal.
“Our attendance was great tonight,” Lipka added. “It was terrific to see so many MSU student-athletes supporting the young ladies in our program. I also want to thank all of our loyal fans who stuck with us throughout a difficult season.”
Morehead State concludes the season with a 2 p.m. ET match at Murray State Sunday.
