Arkansas Maintains Forward Momentum With Win
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 15 Arkansas topped Alabama 2-1 on the road in overtime Thursday night to improve to 10-1-0 on the year and 3-0 in the Southeastern Conference more than halfway through its 30th season.
With the victory, the 2016 Razorbacks now own the school record for best start in program history, surpassing the 2008 team’s 9-1 start. Arkansas is tied with No. 8 South Carolina (9-0-1) on top of SEC standings with three conference wins each.
Freshman Stefani Doyle put the Razorbacks on the board 1-0 in the 28th minute, taking advantage of a tangle of players along the left corner of the goal to put the ball into the back of the net. The score was Doyle’s fifth of the season.
Arkansas would hold the lead until Alabama freshman midfielder Keely Cartrett headed in the equalizer during the 76th minute of play, forcing overtime. Senior midfielder Lindsey Mayo would secure the win by scoring from a strike along the penalty kick mark in front of the goal. It was her fifth goal of the year and third game-winning score this season.
Mayo also scored the game-winner in Arkansas’ double overtime season opener against James Madison on Aug. 19.
With the loss, Alabama would fall to 6-3-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in conference play.
“We talk all the time about little things determining games and today proved that,” head coach Colby Hale said. “We scored two great goals and I thought we limited their chances from the run of play. They are a very good team and I’m proud of them. This team’s character shows through with wins like this. We will enjoy this tonight and prepare for a good Ole Miss team tomorrow.”
Reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week goalkeeper Cameron Carter improved to 10-1 on the season, logging three saves in the contest.
Arkansas held a 20-11 advantage over the Crimson Tide in shots with eight on goal, and an 8-5 edge in corners.
The Razorbacks will next face Ole Miss (6-5-0, 1-2-0) in Oxford, Mississippi, on Sunday in a nationally televised match on SEC Network at 2 p.m. CT.
