Army's Late Goal Sinks Iona In Home-Opener
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – A late goal by the Army Black Knights in the '87 sunk the Iona Gaels in its home-opener on Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 1-0.
The beginning of the game was controlled by the Maroon & Gold. They did not allow a single Army shot until the '30 while they had five of their own in the opening '22. Rebus recorded Iona's lone shot on goal in the first half at the two-minute mark. The Black Knights began to establish themselves in the latter portion of the first half when forward target Erynn Johns had two strong attempts that just missed the cage.
Iona out shot Army 4-2 in the first half. The tide turned in the second with the Black Knights doubling up the Gaels in shots, 6-3. The Gals had to defend against four Army corner kick attempts, three of which came in the second half.
Lauryn Westman scored the lone goal off an assist from Johns to secure Army's second win of the season. Johns beat the Iona defense down the right side and was able to get a lofted cross into the penalty box. Westman camped in the upper left portion of the box and took a soft dribble before hitting the decisive shot in the back left of the net.
The Gael attack was led by senior Christine Rebus, junior Amber Crispin and freshman Faith Preziosi, all of whom had a team-high two shots. Freshman Andrea Ferrer had one shot off net. Freshman Emma Havrilla set an early new career-best with three saves in net.
This is the second straight year Army defeated Iona by a score of 1-0. Last season the Black Knights bested the Maroon & Gold in West Point, NY in each teams' season opener.
The Maroon & Gold return to action on Friday, Aug. 24 at NJIT in Newark, NJ. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
