Asare scores late as Francis Marion ties Spartans 1-1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Francis Marion University freshman forward Elizabeth Asare scored with 1:34 remaining in regulation to force overtime and the Patriots would go on to tie USC Upstate 1-1, Sunday afternoon (Aug. 28) in women's soccer action.
Francis Marion, 1-3-1 on the young season, will return home to host Winthrop University on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m. The Patriots conclude a season-opening stretch that saw them play five matches in 10 days.
USC Upstate (0-2-1) looked to be on track to capture its first win of the season, but Asare was able to beat USC Upstate goalkeeper Sarah Plantz with a 19-yard shot.
FMU outshot the Spartans 21-10, including 6-2 in the two 10-minute overtime periods, but was unable to push across the match-winner. Asare registered a team-high five shots, while sophomore Yasmin Bunter got off four attempts. Asare’s score was her second of the young season.
The Patriots also led 8-3 in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock registered three saves, while Plantz made nine stops.
USC Upstate took a 1-0 lead just before halftime, in the 41st minute, when Kayli Moore scored on a rebound shot. Vetock stopped an initial shot by Michelle Calmeyn, but was unable to hold the ball and Moore took advantage.
FMU defenders Rebeccah Hoekstra, Kimmy Lawrance, and Sandy Odembo, all of whom played the entire 110 minutes, anchored the Patriot defense that allowed only four shots on goal.
