EASTON, MA – The College of Saint Rose scored a pair of goals early in the first half that stood up en route to a 2-0 victory at Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill today. The Golden Knights (13-1-2/10-1-2 NE-10) posted their fourth shutout in the last five games and in the process delivered the 250th career victory to 17th year head coach Laurie Darling Gutheil who is now one of only 10 active NCAA Division II coaches to have reached that milestone.
Junior forward Carmelina Puopolo (Scarborough, ONT/Cardinal Newman) set up a strike and also scored her league-leading 15th goal of the year to pace Saint Rose, which is ranked #17 in the most recent NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Top-25 Poll. Freshman midfielder Amanda Vasquez (Tustin, CA/Foothill) provided the game-winner.
Junior keeper Jessica Gerski (Harbor City, CA/Bishop Montgomery) recorded four saves, including three in the second half, to register her fourth clean sheet of the year. Meanwhile, junior keeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) turned aside seven shots-on-target for Stonehill (5-5-5/4-5-4 NE-10).
Saint Rose controlled much of the action by manufacturing a 14-8 shot advantage, including a 9-4 differential in shots-on-target, and developed six corner kicks while allowing only three.
The Golden Knights puts themselves up 1-0 with a mere 3:05 expired. Puopolo delivered a cross from the left flank that Vasquez one-touched home to extend her goal scoring streak to three contests with her fourth game-winner this autumn. Eighteen minutes later, Puopolo finished a quick feed in the box from sophomore forward Brittany Barry (Springfield, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy).
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back on the road Wednesday with a 4:00 pm conference date at New Haven in West Haven, CT. The Owls are also on the road Wednesday with a 4:00 pm NE-10 meeting at Saint Anselm in Manchester, NH.
