Badgers fall, 2-1, to unbeaten Memphis Tigers
MADISON, Wis.-- The Wisconsin men's soccer team lost its third-straight game on Sunday, falling, 2-1, to the Memphis Tigers at the McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison.
The Tigers came out strong and jumped to an early 1-0 lead in just the 2nd minute of play. Thomas Shannon recorded his first goal of the season on a double assist from Liam Collins and Andreas Guentner.
Memphis dominated possession and outshot UW, 5-2, in the first half, taking its 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Badgers didn't go away, however, and took advantage of the Tigers' slowed pace midway through the second half. Sophomore Joey Tennyson (Milwaukee, Wis.) tied the game at 1-1 at the 64:43 mark with his second goal of the season on an assist from junior Tomislav Zadro (Toronto, Ontario.)
With the game tied, Memphis felt pressure to regain the lead. Mark Sherrod came up big for the Tigers, just as he has all season, and netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 80th minute. Lewis Ellis was credited with the assist on Sherrod's fourth goal of the season.
"We did some things in the second half, fought our way back," said UW head coach John Trask. "Then we had one moment of a break down and Memphis is a good enough team to punish us."
After starting the season with back-to-back wins, the Badgers are now 2-3-0, while Memphis improves to 4-0-1.
Wisconsin had a chance to add a couple of key victories to its record over the weekend from its home field but was unable to capitalize.
"We struggle in a Friday-Sunday situation, whether mental or physical," Trask said. "Some our guys don't seem to be able to play two tough games over the weekend. It is disappointing; it is the demands of college soccer."
The Badgers will be tested again next weekend in a Friday-Sunday situation, this time on the road. Wisconsin will travel to Chicago where they will take on Drake at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 before taking the field Sunday, Sept. 18 against SIU Edwardsville with a scheduled start time of 11 a.m.
