Balanced Offense Leads to Home Win for UW-W
Behind a balanced offensive attack, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team stayed perfect at home with a 3-1 victory over Luther College Wednesday evening.
The Warhawks, 4-2 overall, had six different players record a point in the match – three that scored goals and three that tallied assists. Luther, who scored first in the match, falls to 0-3-3 this season.
UW-W threatened early when Carly Nehls ripped a shot off the post, but Luther countered moments later with a pair of shots on goal that were stopped by Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North).
A Warhawk foul in the 23rd minute led to a free kick for the Norse, and they capitalized to take a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes and 59 seconds later the match was tied. A Luther foul led to a free kick just outside the box for UW-W. Kaci Schonert (Racine, Wis./Horlick) put the ball in a perfect spot and Payton DeLuga(Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) headed it in for her first goal of the season and fifth of her career.
Luther put an increased amount of pressure on the Warhawk defense in the final minutes of the first half but a pair of saves by Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North), and some help from the crossbar, and the match headed to the half tied at one.
The start of the second half featured a pair of shots by the Norse, but it was the Warhawks who were able to change the score.
In the 54th minute, Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) slid a ball through the defense to Carly Nehls who made a move on her defender and hit a shot to the back post that gave UW-W a 2-1 lead.
Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy), who replaced Yonan to start the second half, made three second half saves and got another insurance goal in the 76th minute when Alyssa Lennon (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) ripped a low shot that went between the keeper's legs to make it 3-1 in favor of the home team. Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie)was credited with the assist.
Luther tallied 20 shots in the match, including eight on goal, while the Warhawks recorded 16 shots, nine on goal.
Up next, the Warhawks will travel to St. Louis, Missouri for the "W Challenge" hosted by Washington University-St. Louis. UW-W will face DePauw on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and depending on the outcome of Saturday's match, they will take on either Rhodes or WashU on Sunday.
