Banes Leads Towson to 3-0 Win Over Iona
TOWSON, Md. - Senior Emily Banes scored five points to lead Towson women's soccer (1-1-0) to a 3-0 victory over Iona (0-2-0) Sunday afternoon at Tiger Soccer Complex.
Banes scored the game's first two goals - four minutes apart - in the second half and assisted on junior Katie Ponce's tally in the 65th minute. Junior goalkeeper Erin Quinnmade one save and recorded the first shut out of her career.
"I thought we dominated all facets of the game today," said Head Coach Greg Paynter. "We came out of the half and really put pressure on them the first 10 minutes. Banes' goals settled everyone down, and we just kept possession the rest of the game."
The teams got off to a slow start in the first half, heading into the break in a scoreless draw. But Banes gave the Tigers a spark at 50:31 when she knocked in a header off a feed from senior Amanda Novy. Just two and a half minutes later, the senior from Long Island took a hard strike from 16 yards past Iona's keeper for the 2-0 lead.
Ponce also scored from deep for Towson after taking a short pass from Banes in the upper right corner of the 18-yard box. Her shot sailed into the net for the final goal of the game.
The Tigers out-shot Iona 15-2 and had nine corner kicks to the Gaels' three.
Towson returns to action on Friday, August 30 at 7 p.m. against Radford in Virginia.
