Barone Named NEC Player & Rookie Of The Week
October 9, 2018
Somerset, NJ – Wagner freshman forward Luisa Barone was named Northeast Conference (NEC) Player and Rookie of the Week for her efforts in leading the Seahawks to a 1-0 overtime victory at LIU Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon.
For Barone, it is her first collegiate weekly NEC honor. With the Parsippany, NJ native earning both Player and Rookie honors, she becomes the first Seahawk to receive dual honors from the conference since fellow teammate, senior goalkeeper, Katie Viscardi, was tabbed Defensive and Rookie of the Week back on October 26, 2015.
The first-year Seahawk netted her first collegiate goal in brilliant fashion in the win over LIU Brooklyn, striking an overtime winner in the 97th minute to give Wagner its first conference win of the season, and the first under second-year head coach, Phil Casella. The winning score was set up when sophomore Le'la Allen played Barone up the left sideline, and the freshman cut toward the corner of the box where she unleashed a laser that curled inside the back post for the win.
Barone, Allen and the rest of the Seahawks gear up for their next match on Friday, October 12, when they travel to Sacred Heart.
