Barone's Golden Goal Lifts Wagner To Victory
Brooklyn, NY – In the 97th minute, freshman forward Luisa Barone blasted a long kick that curled into the far corner of the net in propelling the Wagner College women's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory against LIU Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 2-10 overall and 1-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action while the Blackbirds fall to 2-9-3 and 0-3-1 in conference play.

"This was something that was a long time coming and it was a total team effort this afternoon," said head coach Phil Casella following his team's victory. "Every player was so invested and worked hard every minute as we truly earned this victory."
Wagner's win was an historic one for second-year head coach, as it marked the first conference victory in his tenure as bench boss of the Seahawks. Additionally, the Seahawks improve to 5-0-1 against LIU Brooklyn in their last six meetings.
"Luisa's goal was a sensational one," added Casella. "It was a great ball down the line, in which we were having a lot of success all game long. She was able to cut inside and capitalize on the opportunity."
The visitors nearly got the game winner just three minutes into the first extra session as senior captain Peyton Beck was able to head the ball on net after sophomore midfielder, Julia Fitzsimmons sent one in from the corner but Beck's chance sailed high over the net, keeping the game scoreless.

On LIU's first possession of overtime, Mia Rose Daly found space and sent in a long, chip shot that was corralled by Beck, which effectively setup Barone's eventual game-winner.
A quarter of the way into the second half, LIU Brooklyn's Marian Awad had a chance in the 60th minute to put the Blackbirds on the board, but was denied the chance by Wagner senior goalkeeper, Katie Viscardi.

Five minutes later, Viscardi again denied Awad, who entered play with among the NEC-leaders in goals scored with seven, as Awad raced in on net but the Hazlet, NJ native was able to make a diving stop in preserving the shutout.

The Seahawks nearly struck for the contest's first goal in the 75th minute when sophomore Le'la Allen booted a chance that found the arms of LIU Brooklyn's goalkeeper, Megan Virgin.

Junior goalkeeper, Delaney Beck, who replaced Viscardi in the 65th minute, filled in nicely, in recording back-to-back stops on Josie Watson and Maddie Shockey, with each attempt coming within a forty-second span. The Blackbirds had a chance late by Dana Wiesmore's attempt went wide of the net.
These teams played to a first half stalemate with each having few chances in scoring the first goal of the contest. In the 6th minute, Allen had an opportunity to put the visitors ahead on the scoreboard but her shot went wide of the goal.
The Blackbirds had two attempts at the first marker of the contest as in the 17th minute, Maddie Shockey's attempt went wide as he blasted a chance from the left side of the field. Three minutes later, Emily Poole's chance also went wide of the target.
LIU Brooklyn almost got on the board in the 36th minute as Meredith Hill took the free kick, approximately 32 yards out, and sent a low-lining shot that found the arms of Viscardi, for her first save of the afternoon. For Viscardi, that stop marked the 170th career save in her Seahawk career.

With a minute left in the first half, junior captain Kaitlyn Ross sent the free kick chance into the box, but LIU's keeper was able to make the save and keeping the score knotted at zero.
For the game, LIU Brooklyn outshot Wagner, 11-9, and took a 4-2 advantage off corner kicks. Wagner held a 7-3 edge in saves, with Viscardi recording four in her 65 minutes of action while Beck, who earned the victory, made three stops in 33 minutes of play.
Wagner concludes its two-match road trip on Friday, October 12, when the Seahawks travel to Sacred Heart before returning home on Sunday, October 14, to host Fairleigh Dickinson.
