Barry Closes Preseason With Overtime Win
MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers closed out the women's soccer preseason with a 2-1 overtime win over the Webber Warriors at Buccaneer Field on Friday night.
Rookie Lavinia Nkomo, who scored the game-winner in overtime and assisted Lauren Manna on the game's first goal, was the star of the game for the Bucs.
About midway through the first half, Nkomo found the edge of the Warriors' defense and whipped a cross to Manna in the penalty box and the sophomore continued her torrid play in the preseason by beating Makenzie Vance to the near post.
A defensive miscue by the Bucs in the 63rd minute let the Warriors even things up. Barry keeper Becca Rogers came out on a challenge, but Brittany Filho-Moore won the race to the ball and set a pass into the center of the field. The Barry defense got a foot on the ball but was unable to clear and Aubrie Strohmenger came flying into the score into the empty net.
In overtime, Dominique Richardson fed Nkomo who juked around a defender and ripped a shot to the far post to end the game.
Rogers had eight saves for the Bucs while Tamara Vuckovich swept a ball off the line. Vance made five stops for the Warriors and also got an assist from one of her backs.
The Bucs open the regular season on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Montevallo.
