Baylor Tops Rice 1-0 Friday In Season-Opener
August 17, 2012

HOUSTON – Rice sophomore goalkeeper Amy Czyz posted a career-high eight saves, but a first half Baylor goal was the lone score in a 1-0 win over the Owls’ soccer team in the season-opener for both teams Friday night on Holloway Field at the Rice Soccer/Track Stadium.

Cyzy was sound and solid with eight saves, including five in the first half as Baylor provided a steady wave of offensive pressure. The Bears built an 18-4 advantage in shots in the first half and stretched the margin to 24-8 overall for the contest.

“Defensively we were stretched-out too much and Baylor was able to put us on our toes quite a bit,” said Rice head coach Nicky Adams. “I am disappointed we did not execute our game plan. Amy came up with some huge saves that kept it close. Our freshman forward, Lauren Hughes, also played well. Although she was able to attack, we didn’t support her.”

Baylor’s Alex Klein came off the bench to score in the 41st minute and break the game’s 0-0 deadlock. After a serve from Katie Daigle on the right wing, Klein found the back of the Rice net with a shot from 12 yards out.

“Baylor is a very good team to have to play as your very first game,” Czyz said. “They came at us, no question, but I liked how we kept fighting. We worked together to get better, and we did. We played better in the second half.”

Rice was led in shots by true freshman Holly Hargreaves who finished with three attempts. Senior Julia Barrow and Quinney Truong both had hard shot attempts in the first half that were corralled for saves by Baylor keeper Michelle Koss.

The Bears improved to 1-0-0. The Owls (0-1-0) are back in action on August 24 with a road match against SEC power LSU. Start time against the Tigers is slated for 7 pm in Baton Rouge, La.
