BC's Streak Extends To 6 Games
Newton, Mass. -
The Boston College women's soccer team extended its winning streak to six consecutive games behind a 2-0 victory over Harvard at the Newton Soccer Field on Friday evening. The Eagles are now 7-1 on the season, while Harvard dropped to 3-1.
Sophomores Hayley Dowd and Andrea O'Brien scored, while Alexandra Johnsonearned her seventh victory and fourth shutout of the season in goal.
The Eagles streak began on August 29 with a win at Jacksonville (1-0), followed by a win over North Florida (5-0). BC returned home to beat Northeastern, 1-0, on Sept. 3 followed by two more road wins at Milwaukee (2-0) on Sept. 5 and at Illinois State (4-1) on Sept. 7.
The 2-0 victory over Harvard was the first home win of the season. In the steak, Dowd has six goals and two assists for 14 points, while Stephanie McCaffrey has three goals and five assists for 13 points. Johnson has a GAA of 0.17 in the run.
The first half ended in a tie, though BC should have been up by a goal. In the 35th minute, Harvard dropped McCaffrey in the box on the end line to earn a penalty kick. The Harvard goalkeeper Lizzie Durack made a diving stop on McCaffrey's shot to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
Early in the second half, Harvard had a great chance off a corner kick in the 58th minute. Bailey Gary sent the corner kick to the far post. Brooke Dickens out-jumped everyone and headed the ball just wide of the BC goal.
Boston College finally struck in the 77th minute of play. McCaffrey was dropped outside the box from 26 yards out to the left of the Harvard goalkeeper. McCaffrey sent the free kick into the box to the far post and Dowd one-timed it in for the sixth goal of the season.
Harvard's best chance came off a corner kick in the 58th minute. Just four minutes later, McCaffrey placed a ball down the left sideline to Lauren Bernard. The Eagles junior midfielder carried the ball into the box and with a couple moves cleared the end line. Bernard sent the ball to the far post outside the goal mouth, when O'Brien ran onto the ball and one-timed it to the back of the goal. It was her second goal of the season and Bernard's fourth assist.
BC held an, 11-4, edge in shots while both teams had two corner kicks apiece. Harvard's goalkeeper Lizzie Durack had four saves, while BC's Johnson had just one.
