Bearcats blank Patriots 3-0 in PBC match
GREENWOOD, SC – Lander University broke a scoreless deadlock with Francis Marion University by scoring a pair of first-half goals in a three-minute span and the Bearcats went on to claim a 3-0 win over the Patriots, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2) in Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer action.
Both teams conclude their regular-season schedule and will next play in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament this week. FMU drops to 8-4-4 overall and 5-3-1 in the PBC, a three-win improvement over the 2012 season and the program’s first winning campaign since 2009.
Francis Marion will play host to Clayton State University on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in a first-round match of the PBC Tournament. Both teams finished the regular season with a 5-3-1 league mark, but the Patriots own the tiebreaker by virtue of a 2-0 road victory over the Lakers on Oct. 19. It will be the Patriots’ first home tournament match in 11 years.
Lander (10-4-1, 6-3) took a 1-0 lead at the 36:40 mark when Robert Seaton scored off an assist by Clement Dauchy. The margin was doubled only 2:24 later when Guillaume Pommett headed in a corner kick by Kevin Durand.
Lander scored its final tally in the 64th minute as Dauchy registered an unassisted score.
Lander outshot Francis Marion 22-7 and led 10-2 in corner kicks. Senior Cody Farrier led the Patriots with three shots.
FMU freshman goalkeeper Nick Stover recorded a career-high 12 saves, while the Bearcats’ Barrett Nielsen made four stops.
