Beavers Draw With Missouri, Stay Undefeated
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women’s soccer team continued its undefeated start to the 2017 season Friday evening, as the Beavers battle Missouri to a 0-0 draw at Paul Lorenz Field.
With the clean sheet, Oregon State (1-0-2) has now allowed just one goal in three matches this season, and has not conceded in either of its home contests.
“This was really a hard-fought match,” said Oregon State head coach Linus Rhode. “Missouri is a very good team. I thought our players came out with an edge. This was a good performance, and if we continue to play like that, good things will happen.”
Oregon State held a 14-9 advantage on shots in the match. Senior goalkeeper Bella Geist posted her second shutout of the season, and the 14th of her career.
Senior Emma Jones came close to giving the Beavers an early lead, as she just missed a chance from close range less than three minutes in. The Beavers continued to control the opening stages of the match, creating five shots within the first 10 minutes.
Missouri (2-0-1) nearly found a breakthrough in the 26th minute on a chance created on a set piece, but Geist came up with a diving save to keep things level.
Sophomore Taylor Lemmond had a chance to put the Beavers in front headed to the break, but her effort from the top of the box was off frame and the teams went to the intermission scoreless.
Oregon State came very close to going in front in the 71st minute with a flurry of chances from close range. Sophomore Nicole Nickerson started things off by hitting the post before senior Kayla Latham saw her shot saved. Nickerson followed that up with a shot that was cleared off the line and out of danger.
Neither side was able to get on the board in regulation, and the teams headed to overtime.
Senior Nikki Faris came within inches of ending the match within the first two minutes of the first extra period, bouncing a shot off the left post from nine yards out. Neither team was able to find the net, however, as the contest ended in a draw.
The Beavers will return to action Sunday, when they host Kansas in a match that will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
