Beavers Strike First but Fall to Orange, 3-2
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Oregon State University men’s soccer team got an early lead against [7/7] Syracuse on Tuesday night at the SU Soccer Stadium thanks to junior Hassani Dotson (Federal Way, Wash.), but surrendered a late goal to drop the road decision at 3-2.
Dotson got the Beavers (2-4) on the board in the ninth minute, taking the ball up the left side of the pitch, juking through two Orange (4-0-2) defenders and curving a shot past Hendrick Hilpert for the lead.
Syracuse responded quickly, as Jonathan Hagman took a pass from Adnan Bakalovic in the 16th minute and buried a shot past redshirt-junior Ryan Vincent (Newberg, Ore.) to even the tilt at 1-1 heading into the locker rooms.
A foul from OSU in the 54th minute gave a penalty kick to the hosts, and the ensuing attempt from Kamal Miller was put away for a 2-1 Syracuse lead.
Junior Matthias Binder (Bad Fischau, Austria) drew his own foul just outside the box on the Orange’s half and curved home a bullet from long range on the set piece for his first goal of the season and a 2-2 score in the 66th minute.
Vincent made a brilliant save in the 73rd minute to keep the contest knotted at two goals apiece, but the final say came in the 87th minute as Hugo Delhommelle took a corner for Syracuse in the 86th minute and found the head of John-Austin Ricks in the box.
Ricks’ headed shot appeared to go off-target but caromed off a Beaver defender and into the goal for a 3-2 lead with under four minutes to play.
Syracuse would hold on for the win despite OSU throwing numbers forward in the attacking third in the closing minutes.
Oregon State returns home after the four-game road swing to take on the University of Portland on Sunday, September 17, at Paul Lorenz Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT.
