Beavers Win Civil War
CORVALLIS – Emma Jones scored on a brilliant free kick to give Oregon State a 1-0 Civil War win over Oregon on Thursday afternoon, as the Beavers celebrated their 2017 Senior Day.
Jones’ tally came on a curling effort from 19 yards out in the 83rd minute. It was the senior’s third goal of the season, all three game-winners off free kicks.
“The Civil War is always intense,” said Oregon State head coach Linus Rhode. “I felt we had more of the run of play in the first half, and then there was a long spell in the second half where we just couldn’t get out. Emma finished off that free kick as she always does. It was an awesome game, and I’m so happy for our seniors.”
Goalkeeper Lizzy Coryell held a clean sheet in her collegiate debut, making six saves to secure the victory.
“Lizzy was phenomenal today,” Rhode said. “She came on and made some fantastic saves. It was awesome to see.”
As a team, Oregon State took 11 shots in the match, with six of them coming in the second half.
Natalie Higgins recorded the first shot of the match early on, but the effort was blocked. Taylor Lemmond followed that up with a pair of attempts in the 23rd minute, having her first attempt saved and her second blocked.
The Oregon State back line held firm throughout the first half, limiting the Ducks’ scoring chances. The two sides headed to the intermission level at zero.
Nikki Faris created the first opportunity of the second half, driving down the right side, before placing the ball just wide of the target. Kayla Latham very nearly found the breakthrough in the 54th minute, with a header that bounced off the post and out. Jones followed that up by curling one wide just minutes later.
Faris headed one on target in the 70th, but it was an easy save for the Oregon goalkeeper. Jones put away her free kick effort to put the Beavers in front in the 83rd. Coryell followed that up with a big save moments later to keep Oregon State in front, as the Beavers held the clean sheet to take the win.
Oregon State celebrated its 2017 senior class in a special pregame ceremony, as the team honored Bella Geist, Emma Bergstrom, Latham, Faris, Jones, Higgins, Kathryn Baker, Coryell and Emmy Rodriguez.
