Bennett Gets 100th Win at Colorado College
Junior midfielder Jessie Ayers struck for the only goal Colorado College would need in the 14th minute and the defense recorded its second consecutive shutout with a 2-0 whitewashing of Loyola University Chicago on Friday afternoon at the 2013 Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis.
With the victory, Geoff Bennett became the third head coach in program history to register 100 triumphs at CC. His record of 100-58-25 (.613) ranks third for total victories and fourth for winning percentage. Steve Paul posted an overall ledger of 110-46-8 (.695) from 1975-1982, including a 71-42-6 (.622) mark with the team competing as a varsity program. Dang Pibulvech established both standards with a 119-26-6 (.804) mark from 1983 through 1990.
Ayers struck for her first goal of the season after taking a cross from junior midfielder Kaeli Vandersluis on the left side and slipping a shot inside the near post during the first half.
It marks the first time the duo has clicked since the first goal in CC's 2-0 victory over East Carolina University on Sept. 23, 2011.
Lynn Froetscher added an insurance tally with 18:09 remaining in the contest, converting on a feed from sophomore midfielder Alexis Long from five yards out.
The Tigers, now 2-2 for the season, improved to 4-0 all time when the senior forward has scored a goal and 10-0 in games in which she recorded a point.
CC's stingy defense was at it again, holding the Ramblers to only five total shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Scheele needed to make only two saves en route to her second clean sheet of the season and the sixth of her career. It marks the second time that Scheele has recorded back-to-back shutouts for Colorado College.
Meanwhile, the Tigers launched 17 total shots, including nine on target. Junior goalkeeper Monica Gonyo stopped seven for Loyola.
Colorado College resumes play against tournament host and No. 25-ranked Marquette at 1:30 p.m. CT Sunday.
