Beyar, Saez Help Stags To First Win
Carly Beyar scored the first goal of the season for the Fairfield University women’s soccer team, and Veronica Saez posted a clean sheet in her collegiate debut as the Stags defeated the University of Vermont 1-0 on Sunday in Burlington, Vt. The victory improves the Stags to 1-1 on the season, while the Catamounts fall to 1-3, and both squads go 1-1 in play at the TD Bank Classic.
Beyar converted her third career game-winning tally early in the second-half, lofting a ball from the right side of the box into the back of the net. The Stags defense would provide the rest of the work, holding Vermont to just two second-half shots, both of which Saez stopped. The rookie keeper made two additional saves in the first-half to complete her collegiate debut with four saves and a clean sheet.
Fairfield out shot Vermont 10-7, taking five shots in each half. The Catamounts had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks, with just one coming in the second-half, while the Stags earned all four of their corner kicks after intermission.
The Stags are next in action on Friday, August 31 as they take on St. Joseph’s University to begin a three-game homestand. The home opener, set for Lessing Field, will kick-off at 7 p.m.
