Big Win For FSU

Freshman Dagny Brynjarsdottir scores the lone goal for the Seminoles in a 1-0 win over BC.

 

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Eleventh-ranked Florida State (10-6-0, 3-5-0 ACC) got a goal from freshman Dagny Brynjarsdottir in the 84th minute to defeat No. 4 Boston College (9-3-2, 4-3-0 ACC) 1-0 Sunday afternoon inside the Seminole Soccer Complex.

 

Brynjarsdottir put away a header from close range off a double passing combination from Tiffany McCarty and Katie Riley to record her first career game-winning goal. 

 

With the score tied at zero and overtime looming, McCarty played a nice cross from the left sideline to Riley, who one-timed the pass with a header into the box.  Brynjarsdottir was right there to one-time the pass with a header of her own inside the left post and just beyond the outstretched arms of Eagles keeper Jillian Mastroianni for the goal to give the Seminoles all the scoring they would need on Sunday.

 

“I was in the right place at the right moment,” said Brynjarsdottir.  “When I saw the ball coming to her (Katie), I noticed that she was not going to head it to the goal, so I continued my run and was fortunate to finish the play.”

 

“It was a big goal by a young player, who has a lot of promise,” said head coach Mark Krikorian.

 

The Seminoles recorded their seventh shutout of the season and second in league play as the defense shut down the BC offense limiting the Eagles to just three shots on goal the entire game. 

 

“It was a heck of a hard fought win,” added Krikorian.  “Today we had enough chances in the first half to have a goal or two; we had a couple (big) chances in the second half.  Our kids battled hard and we are fortunate to come out with three points today.  I am proud of our group, I am proud of them every time out.”

 

With just two games remaining in the regular season for Florida State, Sunday’s victory was a must win for the Garnet & Gold, who currently sit in ninth place in the ACC standings with nine points.  The Seminoles trail both Miami and Virginia Tech by one point in the standings after the Hurricanes and Hokies kept pace on Sunday picking up key victories of their own.  FSU can make up ground in the standings over the next two weeks as the Seminoles will face Miami on Sunday, October 23 and will then travel to Virginia Tech to close out the regular season on Thursday, October 27.   

 

“I still think this team can win a national championship,” said Krikorian.  “We just need to eliminate the mistakes and today for the most part we eliminated those mistakes.  We didn’t give up a whole lot of scoring chances.  We have to continue to put the ball in the net and see how far we can go.”

 

Florida State continued its domination over Boston College with the win on Sunday running its all-time record to 8-0-2 including a perfect 5-0 record against the Eagles in Tallahassee.  Sunday’s contest marked the sixth time in 10 meetings that FSU has beaten BC by a score of 1-0. 

 

The Seminoles certainly had their scoring chances early in the match as Ines Jaurena received a beautiful pass from Brynjarsdottir to find herself in a one-on-one situation with Mastroianni in the 11th minute.  The junior defender dribbled into the box before trying to sneak a shot inside the right post from about eight yards out, but the BC keeper made a tip save to keep the game scoreless.

 

Less than seven minutes later, Mastroianni once again came up big on a shot off the foot of freshman Kristin Grubka.  Grubka sent a shot from 25 yards out that was bending toward the far post, but Mastroianni got enough of her hand on the ball to deflect the ball off the crossbar. 

 

The Seminoles continued to apply pressure looking for that first goal in the first half as Tori Huster ripped a shot from 20 yards out but it was Mastroianni once again coming up with a diving save near the left post to keep the game tied at zero. 

 

BC’s best scoring chance in the first half came off the foot of Alicia Blose, who sailed a shot high over the left corner in the 44th minute following the Eagles third corner kick of the half. 

 

The two teams went into the locker room tied at zero with the Seminoles holding the advantage in shots (7-4) and corners (5-3).

 

The Eagles turned up the offensive pressure at the start of the second half recording six shots in the first 25 minutes of action, while limiting the Seminoles to just two. 

 

“Boston College came out in the second half, credit to them; they came out hard and put us under some pressure,” added Krikorian.”

 

The best look for BC came in the 68th minute when Blose redirected a pass from Gibby Wagner from inside 10 yards toward the left post, but Kelsey Wys made a great diving save to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. 

 

Wys played all 90 minutes in goal for the Seminoles finishing the game with three saves and posting her third shutout of the season.

 

Jaurena, McCarty and Tiana Brockway led the team with two shots each, while BC’s Kristen Mewis led all players on Sunday with four shots. 

 

The pink jerseys worn on Sunday in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer will be auctioned off online at www.seminoles.com beginning Monday, October 17 - Wednesday, October 26.  All proceeds will benefit the Tallahassee Memorial Sharon Ewing Walker Breast Health Center.

 

Florida State hits the pitch for its final regular season home match of the season on Sunday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. against Miami.  The match is also Senior Day as the Soccer Complex, so fans are encouraged to arrive early as we honor this year’s senior class.
