Billikens, Redhawks Fight to 0-0 Draw
August 19, 2012

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Saint Louis unleashed a relentless second-half offensive attack against Southeast Missouri State Sunday night, but the Billikens had to settle for a 0-0 tie with the host Redhawks at Houck Stadium.

After outshooting SEMO 4-3 in the first half, SLU (0-1-1) registered a 12-2 advantage in shots in the second stanza. The Bills tacked on another attempt in the second overtime to finish with a 17-5 edge for the game.

Ten different players recorded at least one shot for the Billikens, led by junior forward Maddie Gebauer (career-high four) and sophomore forward Abbey Stock (career-high-tying four). Two of Stock’s attempts were on frame and occurred within 18 seconds of each other in the 85th minute.

SEMO goalkeeper Renee Kertz, who made four saves, also stopped shots on goal by senior defenders Emily Viviano and Maggie Baumann in the 74th minute and 86th minute, respectively.

SLU senior keeper Katie Walsh made two saves, one in each half, in picking up her 15th career shutout.

In addition to its domination in shots, Saint Louis enjoyed a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“Obviously we would have liked to walk away with a victory, but it was a good result tonight,” head coach Kat Mertz said. “Give credit to SEMO, they came out really strong in the first half and had a couple of chances. But the second half we turned that around. We outshot them by a wide margin and created a lot of opportunities.

“At the end of the day we got a point on the road, so we’ll take that and start preparing for Evansville,” Mertz said. “We’re ready to come home and start getting ready for the long week ahead of us.”

The Billikens play at Evansville Friday, Aug. 24, at 4:30 p.m. before hosting nationally ranked Marquette Sunday, Aug. 26, in the home opener at 5:30 p.m.
