Blue Raiders Edge Tennessee Tech, 3-2
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - A goal by Paige Goeglein at the 53rd minute lifted Middle Tennessee to a 3-2 victory over in-state rival Tennessee Tech on Friday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders (4-2-0) dominated the offensive possesion, leading the Golden Eagles (2-4-1) in shots 24-to-9. Middle Tennessee connected 11 shots on goal as the Blue Raiders picked up their second consecutive win.
Whitney Jorgenson added the first goal for the Blue Raiders at the 12th minute as she scored off a deflection from a Tennessee Tech player.
Nearly a minute later, Tori Hawkins got a great cross from senior Regina Thomas to put the Blue Raiders up by two.
Tennessee Tech broke up the shutout at the 33rd minute when Ellie Iaciofano headed the ball in the net thanks to a corner from Taylor Hicks.
In the first half, Middle Tennessee out shot Tennessee Tech, 16-to-4 and controlled the corner kicks advantage 7-to-1. Overall, MT held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles scored the equalizer at 51:52 when Iaciofano knocked in her second goal in the match. The junior forward added the tying goal thanks to an assist from Chelsea Ladd.
The Blue Raiders scored the game winner nearly two minutes later when Paige Goeglein tallied her fifth goal this season. The senior utilized the help of Whitney Jorgenson who dropped the ball in the box and Allison Stallard fired away inside the right side before Goeglein finished the goal.
Jessica Gilchrist (2-1-0) notched her second victory Friday afternoon. The redshirt senior picked up a pair of saves as she faced nine shots during the contest.
Middle Tennessee returns home to the Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium when the Blue Raiders host Belmont on Sunday at 1pm for Faculty Staff/ Day.
