Blue Raiders roll Alabama A&M 8-0
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee soccer team (3-3-2) tallied its third-straight shutout and fifth of the season Friday evening, rolling over Alabama A&M (0-9-0) 8-0.
The Blue Raiders jumped ahead early, as Tori Hawkins found Rachael Figg inside the box during the third minute. The goal was Figg’s second of the season. This marked the third-straight contest MT has scored in the opening 10 minutes and second match Middle Tennessee has netted the game-winner during the third minute.
During the 11th minute, Grace Summers scored unassisted to give MT a 2-0 lead, opening the flood gates. The goal was her first of the season. A few minutes later, Emily Jorgenson passed from the left side to Kate Loye. Loye used the pass and some fancy footwork to record her fourth goal of the season.
Loye connected with Summers during the 17th minute to net Summers’ second of the contest, putting MT up 4-0. At 27:06, Hawkins returned to the limelight with assistance from Amalie Anderdal, recording her second goal on the year and Anderdal’s second helper of the season.
Hawkins wasn’t done yet though as she proceeded to dish out two more assists, amassing three on the night. She now leads the Blue Raiders with four assists on the year and is second in points with eight, while Loye paces MT this season with 10 points off of four goals and two assists.
Katinka Stenberg was the beneficiary of Hawkins’ last two assists as the pair teamed up during the 32nd and 35th minutes. The two goals were Stenberg’s first two of the 2013 campaign as the Blue Raiders took a 7-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
Alabama A&M goalkeeper Marissa Oehler snagged seven saves during the opening frame, while MT’s Kelsey Brouwer saw 45 minutes between the pipes with no shots on goal.
During the second period, Middle Tennessee keepers Autumn Woods and Coral Hasley split time in front of the net. Woods started the second half and played 33:42, while Hasley was in for 11:18. Both Woods and Hasley grabbed a save each.
Oehler continued to have shots fired at her from the MT attack during the closing period. She managed to collect seven saves in the last 45 minutes for a total of 14 on the night. However, one Middle Tennessee shot did slip past her in the second half.
In the 48th minute, Courtney Gibson’s shot went wide, but stayed in play and away from the Bulldog keeper. Alli Gale was able to corral the loose ball and net her first goal of the season. Gale’s goal proved to be the final one of the contest as MT claimed the 8-0 victory.
The Blue Raiders return to action Friday, Sept. 27, hosting UAB at 7 p.m. to open Conference USA play.
