Blugolds Open Season with Shutout Victory

September 7, 2013

ST. PETER, Minn. (Blugolds.com) — The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team kicked off the 2013 season Friday on the road against Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.).

The Blugolds scored three goals in the final 20 minutes and held on for the 3-0 shutout victory in the season opener.

Neither team scored in the first half but the Blugolds (1-0) held a 9-5 shot advantage. All it took was one goal though, and the offense opened up.

At 73:12, Teighlor Tvedt (Jr.-Verona, Wis./Verona Area) scored the first goal of the season on an assist from Paige LeGate (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port).

Just three minutes later, at 76:16, Caroline Henderson (So.-Duluth, Minn./East) gave the Blugolds a 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal.

Seven minutes later, Kara Ryan (Sr.-Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) gave UW-Eau Claire an insurance goal on an assist from Tara Dennehy (So.-Eugene Ore./Churchill) on a corner kick.

The Blugolds finished with a 20-8 shot advantage and Nina Behrenbrinker (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) made two saves to pick up her first shutout of the season, picking up right where she left off last season.

It was a relatively clean game, with neither team finishing with any penalties. The Blugolds had nine fouls while Gustavus Adolphus finished with just four. Gustavus Adolphus also held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Next week the Blugolds will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. at Bollinger Field. They will host Hamline University (Minn.) in the home opener.
