Boldt Named To Hermann Trophy Watch List
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior goalkeeper Winston Boldt is one of 32 men’s soccer players from around the nation to be named to the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List for 2014, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced Wednesday.
The Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer and is the official NSCAA Player of the Year award in Division I.
Boldt becomes the first Army men’s soccer player to be considered for the prestigious honor and is Army’s second overall, as women’s standout Molly McGuigan (USMA ’14) was named to the Hermann Award Watch List in 2011.
A 2013 All-American and Academic All-American, Boldt established an Army single-season record with 12 shutouts last season, while finishing third in the nation in save percentage (.888) and fifth in goals against average (.521). Boldt also earned Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year and all-conference first team honors last fall after helping the Black Knights to a 12-3-3 and marking just the fifth 12-win season in team history.
The St. Louis, Mo., native enters the 2014 campaign with 16 career shutouts, which ranks second in Academy history and two behind the 18 clean sheets recorded by Lucas Rice (USMA ’93). Additionally, Boldt completed the 2013-14 academic year with a 3.546 grade-point average as a Portuguese major and will serve as a team captain in 2014.
“Winston has established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the country and he continues to let his work speak for itself,” said head coach Russell Payne. “As a team, we think it’s great that he’s getting recognition for what he’s done individually and for the program.”
Boldt was recently selected as the Deputy Brigade Commander for the U.S. Military Academy Cadet Chain of Command. As the Deputy Brigade Commander, Boldt holds down the second-highest position in the cadet chain of command, which oversees all 4,400 cadets at the Academy. Boldt is the first men’s soccer player to hold that position since the 2007-08 academic year when Daniel Newell (USMA ’08) served in the role.
Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches that are NSCAA members will vote on their top choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15 players. College soccer fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process, by voting for their favorite semifinalist in November at the MAC Hermann Trophy website, managed by LockerDome.
From that pool of 30, six finalists (three men, three women) will be chosen for the award. The winners will be announced in January.

Army kicks off its 2014 campaign on August 29, when it hosts Fairfield at 7 p.m.
