Bonnies Score Late, Pick Up 1st A-10 Win
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Playing with a man advantage for the final 30 minutes, the St. Bonaventure women’s soccer team (4-8-1, 1-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) took advantage late as it scored with three minutes remaining thanks to the partnership of Maureen Madden and Alyssa Lapp to give the Bonnies a 1-0 win over visiting Temple (3-8-2, 0-2 A-10) Friday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
In the 87th minute, senior Madden delivered a curling cross from the right wing onto the head of Lapp near the center of the box about eight yards in front of the net. From there, the junior midfielder redirected Madden’s first collegiate assist past the diving effort of Temple substitute goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff, who was able to get a hand on the header.
“It was a great cross by Mo Madden and a quality finish by Alyssa,” head coach Manoj Khettry said following SBU’s first A-10 win of the season. “It was one of only two good crosses that we had all game. We’ve got to fix that because the build-up is really good.”
The goal was the first of Lapp’s season and fourth of her career, while Madden – a defender – not only picked up her first career assist but also her first collegiate point after more than 1,700 minutes wearing the Brown and White.
The late strike salvaged the game for the Bonnies after they controlled the tempo early, and had an extra player on the field for a third of the game following Temple starting goalkeeper Tara Murphy receiving a red card for intentionally tackling Bona forward Brittany Charles in the box after Charles stole the ball off Murphy’s foot.
“Being up a man certainly helped, but sometimes when you’re up a man the tendency is to take the foot off the gas, and you actually just have to go after it,” Khettry surmised afterword.
SBU looked destined to take a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute on the ensuing Shannon Van Riper penalty kick; however, Kerkoff stopped the penalty effort. Van Riper, a redshirt senior defender, was 2-for-2 on penalty kick opportunities this year entering the game.
The Bonnies dominated much of the first 25 minutes of the contest, holding a majority of the possession and attempting five of the game’s first six shots. However, the teams went to the halftime break mired in a 0-0 tie.
“We did a good job playing to feet and possessing,” Khettry said of the opening 25 minutes. “We felt that we could possess the ball against them, and that’s what we did. We had almost 300 passes in the game – our second-highest this year.”
Katie Kerkman made her first start in net for the Bonnies since Aug. 19 at Milwaukee – SBU’s second game of the season. The senior stopped two Temple shots en route to earning her first shutout of the season and just the second overall on the campaign for Bona’s.
In total, Bonaventure out-shot the Owls, 14-5, with a quintet of SBU players attempting multiple shots, led by Van Riper and freshman Abby Maiello with three each.
St. Bonaventure returns to action at home on Sunday against its second Philadelphia school of the weekend as it battles Saint Joseph’s in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
GAME NOTES: The contest marked just the second time this year that Kerkman (five appearances) has played 90 minutes in a game, with the other coming at Milwaukee … the teams combined to put only one shot on goal in the opening half, that coming off the foot of Maiello … Lapp, Jordan Calabria and Gabi Balseca all attempted two shots for the Bonnies … SBU had one more corner opportunity than the Owls, 3-2 … Bonaventure’s 14 shots were evenly split between the first and second halves, 7-7 … the Bonnies were whistled for 15 fouls, while Temple committed 10.
