Bosnyak powers Stony Brook to 4-1 romp over UMBC
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Regan Bosnyak (Newington, Conn.) scored her first two collegiate goals to help the Stony Brook women's soccer team earn its first America East win, a 4-1 victory over UMBC on Thursday at LaValle Stadium. Freshman Eliza Mendoza (Fontana, Calif.) also scored her first goal as a Seawolf as Stony Brook earned three points in the conference standings.
The Seawolves (3-8-0, 1-1-0 America East) controlled play from start to finish, attempting a season-high 28 shots en route to a breakout scoring performance. Prior to the game, Stony Brook had scored six goals in 10 games, but on Thursday, the Seawolves' offense received a much-needed boost from its freshmen class, which was responsible for three goals and an assist.
Despite a 17-7 shot disadvantage in the first half, it was UMBC (0-10-1, 0-2-0 America East) that struck first as Rachel McKee fired a laser into the top left corner from 25 yards out in the 14th minute.
Stony Brook's unrelenting attack paid dividends 20 minutes later, however, as Bosnyak corralled a loose ball off a corner kick and blasted a 20-yard missile into the left side netting for her first collegiate goal.
It took only 37 seconds for the Seawolves to strike again. Junior Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) dribbled down the right flank and attempted to cross the ball into the penalty area, but it ricocheted off a UMBC defender and into the cage for an own goal to give the hosts a lead they would never relinquish.
Bosnyak struck again in the 63rd minute as the Seawolves capitalized on a counterattack. Freshman Shannon Grogan (Eastampton, N.J.) set up the play with a penetrating run to the endline, before delivering a perfect ball into the center of the box for Bosnyak to put home.
The freshmen class continued its stellar night as Mendoza widened the lead to 4-1 with another insurance strike in the 86th minute. Sophomore Larissa Nysch(Dresher, Pa.), playing in her first game since Sept. 4 due to injury, made a terrific play to wrestle the ball away from a UMBC defender and tip it to Mendoza in front for the easy conversion.
The Seawolves scored four goals in a game for the first time since Sept. 19, 2010, a 4-1 win over Manhattan at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook has now beaten UMBC six consecutive times dating back to 2005.
The Seawolves will look to build on the win on Sunday when they travel to Binghamton for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Bearcats.
