Bosua, Columbia Top Penn in OT, 2-1
PHILADELPHIA – A penalty kick conversion by John Denis and a bicycle kick highlight from Arthur Bosua helped the Columbia men's soccer team outlast Penn, 2-1, in double overtime.
With the win, the Lions improve to 6-2-1 overall and are in a five-way tie with Penn, Harvard, Brown and Dartmouth at 1-0-1 in Ivy League play. The Quakers fall to 3-2-5 overall, snapping their unbeaten streak of six games in the process.
The scoring started early for Columbia, when Bosua was found streaking towards the net in the first half. Amit Shumowitz sent a long ball from the right sideline to just above the six-yard box to his junior teammate, and Bosua did the rest with an impressive bicycle kick goal on the right side of the net.
The bicycle kick goal was the second in three games for Columbia, as Alex Bangerl scored on an equally impressive play in the draw with Brown.
Penn would have the answer in the start of the second half, coming from the top goal-scorer in the Ivy League. Alec Neumann added on to his scoring lead, knocking in his seventh goal of the season during the 50th minute.
For the third time in four contests, the Lions would head to overtime, with action coming late in the second overtime period. Dylan Mott sent a forward pass to Kynan Rocks, who had his shot saved by Etan Mabourakh, but the ball would bounce towards Danny Laranetto. When Laranetto took a quick step towards net, Mabourakh was hit with a foul as Laranetto was tripped, setting up a penalty kick for Denis.
Denis was able to finish on the penalty kick, sending the sideline in eruption with a mere 14 seconds left on the clock. The score from the rookie was his second of the season, as he netted a free kick attempt at Fordham.
In net, Dylan Castanheira earned his second win of the season, saving one shot along the way.
The Lions out-shot the Quakers 14-8, and held the advantage in corner kicks at 12-3.
Up next, Columbia will host Temple in its final game at Manhattanville College on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
