DOVER, Del. – In front of an energetic and spirited crowd of 232 fans at Alumni Stadium, freshman Chelsea Boursiquot (Stratford, Conn.) scored her first career goal, but it wasn’t enough as the Delaware State University women’s soccer team fell, 2-1, in overtime to Towson University.

 

Freshman Kaitlin Brooks also scored her first career goal, but hers came in the 99^th minute as the game-winning goal for the Tigers off of an assist from Sofia Read.

 

“The student and fan support this evening was tremendous,” stated DSU head coach Nitan Soni.  “Our girls really fed off of their energy. The school spirit that was shown made us work that much harder to show the pride we have in that DSU jersey on our backs.  We’re disappointed we couldn’t send everyone home with a Hornet victory, but we’re turning things around.  To go into halftime scoreless, take a lead and then go into overtime against such a talented team from a tough conference shows us that we’re on our way to being ready for Great West Conference play

 

Boursiquot’s goal, which came in the 51^st minute, was a one-on-one situation against Towson senior goalie Jocelyn Papciak.  Boursiquot dribbled the ball nearly 35 yards straight down the middle of the field, took a shot less than ten yards out that got by Papciak.  It was the first goal of the season for the Hornets.

 

“Chelsea was in a great situation to score that goal,” Soni remarked.  “It shows our team that we are capable of scoring against tough goalies and helps build their confidence for future games.”

 

Sophomore Kaitlyn Schech (Abingdon, Md.) almost scored the first goal for DSU in the 45^th minute right out of half time as she put a shot in the upper left corner of the goal.  Papciak had to dive for the ball, but got a hand on it and the save.

 

In the 74^th minute, Towson sophomore Emily Banes tied the game at 1-1 with her goal in the west end zone.  An assist came from junior Cheyenne Skidmore on the play.

 

Despite giving up two goals, freshman Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) showed her range and recorded five saves on the evening.  Papciak also collected five saves.

 

Junior Jeanette Salgado (Bergenfield, N.J.) led the Hornets with three shots (two on goal).  Fellow junior Theresa Wappett (Queensbury, N.Y.) got off two shots of her own with one on goal.  Also getting shots off on the night were senior Michelle Giorgilli (Millville, Del.) and junior Kelsey Gibson (Elizabethtown, N.Y.).

 

The overtime match was the second of the short season for the Hornets, who drew a 0-0 tie in double overtime last weekend against Saint Peter’s.

 

The Tigers improve to 2-1-0 on the year while the Hornets still search for their first victory at 0-4-1.

 

DSU continues a four-game homestand on Sunday as they host Fordham at 1 p.m.
