Boyd Scores Twice as Warhawk Women Win
Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) scored two goals as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee.
The Warhawks, 6-3-1, .racked up double-digit shots for the sixth time this season, outshooting the Raiders 14-9 in the match.
MSOE had the first opportunity with a shot on goal in the 6th minute, but junior goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) was positioned to make the stop.
Eight minutes later Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) registered her second goal of the season to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
Yonan prevented the Raiders from tying the match with saves in the 23rd and 28th minutes.
Emily Grunert (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) attempted to give the Warhawks a two goal lead just before the half, but Abbie Lorenz, the MSOE keeper, was there to make the save.
UW-W came out of halftime with a strong attack registering shots in the 52nd, 55th, 58th and 59th minutes, but could not capitalize.
The Raiders responded with a shot on goal in the 62nd minute but Yonan was again in place to make a save.
Boyd pushed the Warhawk lead to two in the 66th minute when she knocked the ball in with her heel on a cross from Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington).
MSOE caught the Warhawks off balance in the 70th minute with a goal from 30 yards out to halve the Warhawk lead, but Katy Kusswurm (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) connected with Savannah Curtis(Lodi, Wis./Lodi) 13 minutes later to stretch the lead back to two.
Yonan tallied four saves in the match to earn the win and improve to 4-3-1 this season.
Up next the Warhawks will travel to Carthage on September 26 for a match beginning at 5 p.m.
