During last week’s MLS All-Star festivities in Portland, a trio of influential sports administrators unfurled a proposal to the MLS Technical Committee. Headed by West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck, the NSCAA’s Rob Kehoe and former MLS GM Kevin Payne rounded out a group that presented a plan to restructure Division I men’s soccer.
How it was received isn’t clear, but there’s little question the group did its homework. The proposal, which is live on the website for West Virginia’s athletics, outlines a plan to stretch the college season into the spring semester to more closely mimic a professional environment.
The plan has already received the backing of players, coaches and fans alike. The trio went to MLS to flesh out its plan to drum up support from the top of the American soccer tier. As more dominos fall, the proposal gains steam. By the 2016-17 season, the college soccer landscape could be significantly changed. As you’ll see, the vast majority of respondents feel this is for the better.
