Bridgewater Blanks Averett, 5-0
BRIDGEWATER, VA. – Bridgewater College dominated play Sunday afternoon and blanked the Averett College Cougars, 5-0, in non-conference women’s soccer play.
The victory evened the Eagles record at 1-1 on the season while Averett dropped to 0-2.
The game was contested in the midfield in the opening 20 minutes with the Eagles putting the lone shot on goal.
Bridgewater took the lead in the 21st minute when Anna Theisen possessed the ball in the box and punched the ball past the Averett goalie, just inside the left post, for a 1-0 Eagles lead.
That’s the way the first half ended, but the final 45 minutes was all BC.
The Eagles made it 2-0 in the 56th minute when Melanie Waters passed the ball across the box to a wide open Abby Dehoff and the BC senior put the ball into the open net for the goal.
The Eagles scored again less than 10 minutes later when Waters made a nice move to dribble past an Averett defender and then beat the goalie one-on-one to put the Eagles on top 3-0.
Bridgewater added two more goals in the final 10 minutes of play. Brittney Harris passed the ball into the box and freshman Lindsay Suyes headed the ball past the keeper for a 4-0 Eagles lead. In the 89th minute, Dehoff scored her second goal of the game with freshman Kendra Kennedy recording her first career assist to complete the 5-0 victory.
After allowing five goals in a season-opening loss, the Bridgewater defense responded with a solid effort. Freshman Chelsea Steele recorded a shutout in her first career start in goal for the Eagles. The BC defenders kept the Averett offense at bay in the first 20 minutes and in the second half Steele came up with several solid saves to preserve the shutout. Steele finished the contest with nine saves.
Bridgewater returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Hood College for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
