Briggs, WT too much for MSU
CANYON, Texas -- West Texas A&M senior forward Leslie Briggs tallied two goals and assisted on another to lead the Lady Buffs to a 3-1 win over Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament semifinals Friday night at The Pitch in Canyon.
The loss ends the Mustangs' run of two consecutive conference tournament appearances as West Texas A&M (12-6-1) moves on to face Incarnate Word in Sunday's final. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Briggs, who was named LSC Offensive Player of the Year earlier this week, converted her first goal of the season off of a combination of passes from Berklee Watson and Emily Krenek in the 20th minute to give the Lady Buffs an early 1-0 lead.
Briggs hammered in her second goal from the top of the box in the 25th minute to stake West Texas A&M to a seemingly commanding 2-0 lead.
But Midwestern countered with senior defender Berklee Dressler first career goal just 34 seconds later. The Amarillo native drilled a shot into the upper part of the net from 25 yards out to pull the Mustangs back within striking distance.
West Texas A&M tallied the lone goal of the second half to put the game out of reach in the 62nd minute. Senior midfielder Lindsay McHorse redirected a Briggs cross from the left wing for her third goal of the season.
Midwestern State closes the season with a 7-10-3 mark.
