Broman and Patriots dethrone Royals in OT
CHARLOTTE, NC -- With just four minutes to play in the second overtime period of Wednesday night’s (Sept. 10) match between Francis Marion University and Queens University of Charlotte, freshman forward Julius Broman broke the longstanding tie to give the Patriots a 1-0 win over the Royals.
Francis Marion (3-0-0) has won its first three games of the season, a feat the Patriots hadn’t accomplished since they began the 2003 season with a 4-0-0 record. In that season, FMU also got its third win at Queens.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Mike Warn posted his third career shutout in four career starts and his second shutout through the first three games of the 2014 campaign. With three saves against Queens, Warn has now registered 10 saves on the season for a .833 save percentage.
A freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, Broman scored off an assist from sophomore Jeremy Bonyaa in the 106th minute to break the scoreless tie. Bonyaa took a shot that was saved, but not controlled in the box and Broman was there to put the ball in the back of the net for his fourth career goal.
The Patriots will be back in action this Saturday (Sept. 13) as they welcome in Flagler College for both teams’ Peach Belt Conference opener as well as the 2014 home opener at FMU’s Hartzler Field.
Francis Marion outshot Queens 18-15 and both teams took 11 corner kicks. Only three of the Royals’ shots were on frame.
