Broncs Drop OT Heartbreaker to End Season
SEATTLE, Wash. – The sixth-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women’s soccer team fell to the third-seeded Utah Valley University Wolverines 2-1 in overtime in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday at Championship Field.
The Broncs (8-9-4) finish their inaugural season tied for the ninth winningest season by a first year program in the State of Texas.
Down 1-0 with just over 12 minutes remaining, freshman Andreya Barrera got the ball and moved to the top left corner of the box before firing the ball to the far post with her left foot to tie the match. Barrera, who now has nine goals this season, will go down in program history with the first goal, first home goal, first WAC goal and first postseason goal.
The Wolverines (13-6-2) had a chance to take the lead with just over two minutes left in regulation, but Lexi Robison’s shot hit the post.
Robison had an opportunity to win it in the first overtime with a shot at 95:23, by freshman Harlingen South alum Erica Gonzalez (3-3-0) made a diving save to her right to keep the match going.
Just over one minute later, Tori Smith fired a shot at the net. Gonzalez made the save, but Kim Stratford buried the rebound to end the match.
The Wolverines scored their first goal at 74:20, when Robison, the WAC Defensive Player of the Year, scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Sydney Fitzpatrick.
Despite the two goals, Gonzalez performed well in net, finishing with two saves in addition to playing multiple balls out of the goal to prevent scoring opportunities throughout the match. One of the attempts she stopped came at point blank range with about nine minutes left in the first half. She stopped a similar ball early in the second half as well.
The Wolverines got one by Gonzalez at 28:55, but the attacker was offside, so the goal was waved off.
The Broncs had their lone scoring opportunity of the first half in the opening four minutes, when Jessica Duffin (13-6-2) stopped freshman Barrera’s shot on goal.
The Broncs’ next opportunity came at 72:58 when freshman Frida Farstad-Eriksson launched a free kick directly on net, but Duffin got in front of the ball for the save.
Duffin finished with two saves.
The Broncs were outshot 20-6, including 4-3 on goal.
