Brooks Scores in Setback Against #10 Incarnate Word

PORTALES, N.M. — Junior midfielder Jehmaine Brooks (Toronto, Ontario, Canada / Notre Dame Catholic Secondary) scored with about 6:50 left in the opening half, to cut a two-goal deficit in half for the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (9-5-1; LSC 0-2-1), but the Greyhounds dropped a 2-1 decision to tenth-ranked University of the Incarnate Word (11-2; LSC 4-0). The Sunday afternoon Lone Star Conference game was the home finale for Eastern.

The loss snapped a nine-game streak which saw the Hounds win, when Diego Santos (Sr., F, Natal, RN, Brazil / Universidade Federal de Rio Grande de Norte) had either a goal or assist. It also marked Eastern’s first loss to Incarnate Word, since a 4-0 setback, in San Antonio, Texas, on October 31, 2010. The teams split both meetings, last season.

Neither team could gain the early momentum, but the Cardinals’ Vincent Bailey fired a high pass from the right side of the Greyhound box, to Abraham Campos, for a header, to give UIW the 1-0 lead, 16:46 into the game. Vincent Bailey added an insurance goal on a free kick at the 21:11 mark, after an ENMU foul. Brooks scored for the Hounds, late in the first half, after taking a cross pass from Santos. Neither team managed to score in the second half, as the Cardinals held on for the win.

UIW held a 12-5 advantage in total shots and a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. The Cardinals also held a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. Fredrik Widfeldt (Fr., GK, Yterby, Sweden / Katrinelundsgymnasiet) made one save for the Hounds, while Jarred Kahan earned the win for UIW.

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will return to action on Friday, October 26, to visit West Texas A&M. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. MDT start.
