Brown Downs Georgia St. in OT, 2-1
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) buried a penalty kick late in the first overtime period to give the Brown men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Georgia State in Friday's Capital City Classic matchup at Stevenson-Field.
Brown (2-0-0) will face SMU on Sunday (1 PM) in the team's second and final contest of the Capital City Classic, a four-team tournament co-hosted by Providence College. The Friars defeated SMU on Friday, 1-0. Georgia State drops to 3-2 on the season.
Junior Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) notched the other goal for the Bears, while keeper Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) made six saves in net for the win. Yannic Horn stopped two shots on the other end.
Georgia State jumped out to an early lead as Hannes Burmeister scored at 1:52 into the contest for his seventh tally of the season.
Lozada scored the equalizer at 22:21 in the opening half for his first goal of the season. Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) tracked down a pass from Carl John Mix (Stockholm, Sweden) and lofted the ball into the box, where Lozada drilled the one-timer past Horn to even the score at halftime.
The Panthers narrowly edged the Bears in shots during the second half, 9-7. Tyler Long (Clarksville, Tenn.) gave the home side a pair of quality looks in the second frame, but both chances sailed just over the net to force overtime.
In overtime, Chow was tripped up in the box and converted the penalty kick at 97:06 to seal the victory.
The Bears will host SMU on Sunday at 1 PM to close out the Capital City Classic.
