Brown men's soccer announces class of 2019
Friends of Brown Men's Soccer Head Coaching Chair Patrick Laughlin is pleased to announce the addition of six new student-athletes, set to join the Brown community in the fall of 2015. Brown’s impressive Class of 2019 includes players from three different countries and consists of two midfielders, two defenders, one forward and one goalkeeper.
Dean Bloembergen
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Okemos, Michigan
High School: Okemos High School
Club Team: U18 USSDA Crew Soccer Academy Wolves 2013-15
• U18 USSDA Crew Soccer Academy Wolves Starter 2013-2015
• Team captain and varsity starter 2013 – left early to play USSDA as Discovery Player
• Varsity starter and leading scorer with 13 goals 2012
• All-Conference, All-District & All-Region First Team
• All-State Honorable Mention
Coach Laughlin on Bloembergen – “Dean is an attacking player who comes to us from the Crew Soccer Academy Wolves Academy. He is very good on the ball and is more of a passer then dribbler. We feel that Dean can play in four different attacking spots here at Brown. I feel that Dean is physically ready for and will adjust quickly to the college game.”
Matthew Chow
Position: Forward
Hometown: Vancouver, British Columbia
High School: Vancouver College
Club Team: Vancouver Whitecaps USSDA, U17 Canadian National Team
• Canadian U17 World Cup Team – played in all three games in Dubai
• Starter on Bronze medal team at U17 FIFA CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers in Panama
• USSDA Whitecaps residency for three seasons - playoff appearance every year
• U14 (gold medal in nationals) and U15 British Columbia Provincial Team
Coach Laughlin on Chow – “Matthew is a dynamic attacking player we have been keeping an eye on for several years. He has impressed us with his quickness, technique, and attacking play while representing the Vancouver Whitecaps and as a member of the Canadian U17 National Team. He has an incredible range of experience and is a player that we will want on the ball pushing our attack. I am excited to see Matthew compete in the Ivy League.”
Jack Hagstrom
Position: Defender
Hometown: Middleton, Wisconsin
High School: Middleton High School

Coach Laughlin on Hagstrom – “Jack came to our elite camp and greatly impressed us with his balance, size and toughness. He earned his place at Brown by dominating the competition at camp. Jack is a big center back who can also change direction and cover ground. We feel that his strengths are well suited to the Ivy League.”
Carl Johan Mix
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden
High School: Viktor Rydberg Gymnasium

• Two-time juniorallsvenskan(U19) Division I Elite North selection
• Dallas Cup Champion 2013 with Brommapajkarna U19

Coach Laughlin on Mix – “CJ is a player we have known for a few years. He came to our elite camp and was a standout performer. CJ can play on either flank in the back or midfield. He is a very driven and physically capable player that likes to get forward. He has been part of a highly successful youth program at his Swedish club IF Brommapojkarna. I expect him to come in and compete right away.”
Teo Norhagen
Position: Goalkeeper
Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden

Coach Laughlin on Norhagen – “Teo has all the characteristics of a top level goalkeeper. He has good hands and outstanding reflexes, is brave and can organize. He has gotten an incredible soccer education at his club, IF Brommapojkarna, in Sweden and with the Swedish Youth National Teams. We are looking forward to him competing with our returning goalkeepers for the starting spot.”
Justin O'Brien

Coach Laughlin on O’Brien – “Justin comes out of a very successful PDA Academy program. He has been a multi year starter in their Academy. He is a physically tough player that also can play soccer. His ability to solve problems from the back is impressive. He is someone that we see playing at center back or right back. I look forward to having Justin continue his development on College Hill.”
