BU escapes with 2-1 win vs. Northeastern
BOSTON – Despite outshooting its opponent 14-7, including a 10-5 advantage in the second half, the Northeastern men's soccer team (2-4-0) dropped a 2-1 decision to Boston University (4-2-0) on Tuesday night at Parsons Field.
The Huskies trailed 1-0 early in the second half before Simon Cox converted on a penalty kick in the 57th minute, but Boston University capitalized on its limited chances to pot the eventual game-winning goal with 21:30 to play in regulation. NU controlled the pace of play for much of the match, and threw three shots on goal in the final 45 minutes, but could not net the equalizer.
Jonathan Thuresson made two saves in the loss, while his counterpart Nick Thomson also had two saves in an aggressive game that saw three yellow cards issued to each squad.
The teams traded chances throughout an up-tempo and physical first half as each team picked up a yellow card during the opening 45 minutes. Frantzdy Pierrot had Northeastern's first opportunity of the night when he dribbled into the box and ripped a shot from the left side that was blocked, resulting in an NU corner kick in the seventh minute.
After the Terriers earned a corner of their own six minutes later, BU took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Jordan Barker in the 16th minute. Dominique Badji began the play for Boston University when he carried the ball down the right side of the field before dropping a perfect cross into the middle of the box to Barker, who did the rest by hammering it past Thuresson into the right side of the net.
Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave tried to bring the Huskies even in the 21st minute when he got free at the left side from 18 yards out, but whistled a shot just over the crossbar.Harry Swartz had NU's best chance of the half with he took the ball down the left side before tossing it across the box intended for Pierrot, but his bid went just wide.
Northeastern continued to bring the pressure early in the second half Christian McKenna broke away from a defender and chased after a loose ball headed towards goal, but Thomson smothered it away. Nick Goo and Pierrot followed the play, however, but both of their attempts were blocked.
NU knotted the score at one apiece in the 57th minute when the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick following a hold in the box. Cox took the PK for Northeastern, and deposited it in the top left corner for his first goal of the season.
BU went on the offensive after the game-tying tally, and forced Thuresson to make his toughest save of the night to rob Badji on a screaming shot intended for the top of the net, but Thuresson got a hand on it to steer it aside. The Terriers would strike again, however, with 21:30 to play in regulation as Badji fed David Amirini with a pass in the box, and Amirini beat Thuresson between the legs for the score.
The Huskies controlled the play for the remainder of the game in search of the equalizer, and had a strong chance in the final seconds of the match as Thomson robbed Ackim Mpofu on the doorstep as time expired.
The Huskies will be back in action on Saturday when Northeastern travels to Providence to take on the Friars at 7 p.m.
Game Notes:
• Northeastern is now 7-20-1 all-time against Boston University
