Buccaneers Fall to #19 West Florida
MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped their women’s soccer season opener to the 19th-ranked West Florida Argonauts (1-0-0) at Buccaneer Field on Friday night.
West Florida’s Tina Murray made up for the loss of national player of the year Shakira Duncan and first-team All-American Jodi-Ann Robinson with a hat-trick in the game. She scored on a cross from Monica Malavassi in the 15th minute, stole a clearance inside the 18-yard box for a goal just 0:16 seconds into the second half and connected on a breakaway in the 79th minute for what proved to be the game-winner.
The Bucs (0-1-0) refused to give in, however, despite falling behind 2-0. Melissa Madrid got Barry on the board in the 76th minute. Morgan Garcia took a ball at the top of the penalty box and juked past a defender, laying the ball off to Madrid who connected when UWF missed the clearance.
After Murray’s third goal, Emma Karp took a pass from Joanna Stewart at the top of the six-yard box and beat UWF keeper Lauren Byrd to pull the game to 3-2.
West Florida (1-0-0) was able to kill out the clock for the win. Byrd made one save to pick up the win for UWF, while freshman Becca Rogers made 10 saves in her Barry debut for the Bucs.
Barry returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 11:00 am, hosting the North Alabama Lions.
