Bulldog Women Prevails 1-0 in Extra Time
The University of Redlands women's soccer team used a quick overtime goal to secure a 1-0 shutout against the University of La Verne in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition on Wednesday night.
After a hard-fought 90 minutes, it only took the Maroon and Gray one play to put away the Leopards in extra time. It started with persistence from senior forward Hayley Romo (Port Orchard, WA) and her ability to win a 50-50 ball at midfield. She then slotted the ball to senior forward Madison Mills (San Ramon, CA), who took it all the way to the end line before crossing the ball into the box. All the while, sophomore midfielder Eva Vlassopoulos(Portland, OR) ran through the box and knocked it into the Leopards' net for the sudden-victory goal.
Earlier in the contest, the Maroon and Gray immediately began laying shots on the Leopards' goalkeeper. Less than five minutes into the game, Romo fired off a shot that went high. Two minutes later, the Bulldogs received one of their nine total corner kicks that led to a header from sophomore defender Abby Nordquist that, unfortunately, was blocked by a La Verne defender. Over the next few minutes, Redlands continued to produce corner attempts but to no avail.
The stingy Bulldog defense did not relinquish a single shot on net throughout the entire first half.
As action progressed into the second stanza, the Maroon and Gray continued to work for a goal with persistent shot attempts. Once again, Redlands earned a corner kick in the 50thminute that landed on the foot of junior forward Gabby Hart (Sammamish, WA). She gained a quality chance but it ultimately was blocked by a La Verne defender. Hart let loose on another attempt that sailed high.
In the 64th minute, La Verne finally registered its first shot on the Bulldogs' net. Fortunately, junior goalkeeper Brittany Dinkins (Renton, WA) made her lone save of the night to keep the clean sheet.
Redlands picked up the aggression as time wound down with three corner-kick attempts in the final 10 minutes. The second one led to a header from first-year midfielder Logan Swim(Issaquah, WA) that went high, forcing the game into overtime.
Highlighting the Bulldogs' defensive efforts, senior midfielder Rachel Tungol (San Ramon, CA) helped stifle the Leopards throughout the game.
The Bulldogs dominated for much of the match with 11 shot attempts to La Verne's three. The Maroon and Gray also consistently worked to earn corner kicks with a 9-1 margin.
Redlands (4-2-1, 3-0-1 SCIAC) travels to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for SCIAC action on Saturday, September 22, at 7 p.m.
