Bulldogs Remain Undefeated at Home
Fresno State women's soccer remained undefeated against the University of Idaho after picking up the 1-0 win at home Friday night to open Western Athletic Conference play. Sophomore Tara Boyntonknocked in her first collegiate goal to win the game in the 57th minute.
"It was a thrill to play in front to the home crowd," said Head Coach Brian Zwaschka. "I think they had a tremendous positive effect on the players and really got behind us."
In the first half, the programs played even with nine shots a piece. Freshman Katie DeVault picked up six of her seven total saves to keep Idaho off the board. Fresno State couldn't capitalize on either of its five corners before the break as the teams went into the half tied up at 0-0.
"We definitely had some adjustments to make as the game went on," added Zwaschka. "The half time was about us addressing those things. I was super pleased the team responded. And I know they were relieved to get back to the style they know how to play."
The Bulldogs went on the offensive immediately at the start of the second half, putting up four unanswered shots before sophomore Morgan Castain drilled a fifth towards top right corner of the goal.
Idaho's keeper Caroline Towles punched the ball straight into the crossbar and Boynton took care of the rebound for her first goal collegiate goal.
"It feels beyond amazing," said Boynton. "I have been waiting for this goal for like a year and a half. I'm just so excited right now I don't have words."
Fresno State stayed on the offensive for the remainder of the match, outshooting the Vandals 20-12, 13-7 on goal.
"The game kind of started off slow," said Boynton, "but as the second half came in we were playing so well together. We were staying calm and not panicking.
Castain led the Bulldogs attack with a career-high six shots, four on goal. Towles finished with a match-high 12 saves.
Fresno State (6-3-3) hits the road again for its next match, this time on a three-game road stint. The first stop on the trip is CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. Fresno State leads the series 4-1-2. Zwaschka is undefeated against the Roadrunners (1-0-1). The last time the teams met, the match ended in a 0-0 tie after two overtimes.
