Bulldogs Slip Past Niners in Tight Contest
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A redirected corner kick in the second half was the only scoring for either side Friday evening, as visiting Georgia tallied a 1-0 win over Charlotte at Transamerica Field in front of a second-straight crowd of over 1,000 fans.
The 49ers out-shot the Bulldogs 13-to-11 on the night, including doubling them up in the opening period, but were unable to sneak one behind goalkeeper Louise Hogrell who finished with six stops.
Georgia (2-1) posted the match’s lone tally at 55:33 when Caroline Chipman deflected a corner kick taken by Reagan Glisson in a cluster of players inside the six-yard box.
Despite the deficit, Charlotte kept pushing offensively and had chances at an equalizer. Preseason Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year Martha Thomas snaked her way through the Bulldogs back line to give herself a 1v1 chance with Hogrell. However, Thomas put too much spin on her attempt, as it curved just outside the left post from her right-side position in the 66th minute.
Thomas had another opportunity five minutes later, in the 71st minute, but her shot sailed high over the crossbar despite another quality look in front of the net.
Classmate Virginia Lingo provided the Niners with their last best chance of the night with exactly 11 minutes to play. A shot from 35-yards out was juggled by Hogrell, who was nearly forced over the goal line with the power of the attempt. Hogrell had to get her mitts on it a couple of times before securing it just in front of the goal mouth, keeping Charlotte (1-2) off the board.
Preseason All-Conference USA Team selection Megan Greene and Thomas each finished with a game-best four shots, while Glisson topped the ’Dogs with three attempts.
The attendance of 1097 ranks eighth in program history and marks the second-straight game with over 1000. It is only the second time in school history the Niners have drawn at least 1000 in consecutive games and 14th overall instance in which the plateau has been reached.
The 49ers will look to bounce back when they head to Winston-Salem for a 1 p.m. Sunday matchup against unbeaten Wake Forest.
